John Cabot Background
John Cabot’s real name is Giovanni Caboto. John Cabot is the english translation of his name. He was born in 1450 but nobody is really sure where he was born but it is believed he is born in Genoa, Italy. He died in 1599 when he was 49. He is an Italian navigator who dreamed of exploring. He was the son of a spice merchant. He had three sons. Their names are Luduvi co, Sebastian and Sancio.At the age of 11 he moved to Venice. He was the first European to travel to North America mainland (try the Northwest Passage). He is known for discovering Canada because of this discovery other places that were close to Canada was discovered like Cape Breoto Islands. He had 2 voyages but on his second he disappeared. He grew up in Venice, Italy. He is known for discovering Canada. Also he explored the coast of North America.
1st voyage
His first voyage was to Asia because he believed there was a shorter route that Columbus took and he wanted to prove it. Also like Columbus he thought the world was round. Finally King Henry the VII gave him the permission to go and sail. John Cabot sailed on a ship called The Matthew. In May 2nd 1497 John Cabot sailed with 20 men. His crew was 20 men abroad. The other two was him and his son Sebastian. He crossed the North Atlantic and got to North America mainland (which is now Canada) but also like Columbus he thought he had reach Asia. During a part of his jorney he went to Mecca. He returned on August 6th 1497. After his voyage he told stories of many fish near the place he explored.
2nd Voyage
On his second voyage Cabot wanted to travel south of his first voyage in the hope of proving that he had found Noth Asia and China was near. While at sea they sailed in to a storm.During his voyage Cabot’s ships were lost. Even though his voyage was not a success and it did not find a new route to Canada it reopened contact with America and discovered a very popular fishing area.
